The process of getting a diploma

Development and evaluation of a thesis

A thesis is written under the supervision of an advisor (a supervisor).
The bachelor’s thesis supervisor is a person who has at least a doctoral degree; for master’s thesis – it is a person with an academic title or a postdoctoral degree (doktor habilitowany).
The master’s thesis can be written under the supervision of an employee with a PhD, provided the supervisor and the topic of the thesis have been approved by the Faculty Council.

A student preparing his thesis consults his work and presents the partial results during the diploma seminar. The results are discussed and reviewed by the supervisor.

After completing the work and presenting it in writing, the thesis is evaluated, independently, by the thesis supervisor and a reviewer.
If the reviewer grades the work negatively, then the admission to the final examination is determined by the Dean, who may consult another reviewer.

The final control of the originality of a thesis

In order to eliminate the occurrences of plagiarism in the thesis, relevant procedures have been implemented by the Faculty.
The thesis supervisor is required to control the originality of the student’s work by using the system Plagiat.pl.
The process of the thesis checking serves the purpose of identifying unauthorized borrowings which are not an original work of the student.
The dissertations in which unauthorized borrowings are detected will not be admitted to the final examination.

A similarity report is generated as the result of the thesis checking process. The report gives the information about any similarities with other records in the system database.
The report contains the values of two similarity coefficients. The coefficients determine the extent to which the work is made up of fragments identical to those detected in other texts.
These coefficients are defined as the ratio of the number of words found in other texts to the total number of words in the tested document.

When calculating the first coefficient, all five-word phrases found by the system in other documents are taken into account.
When calculating the second coefficient, only those phrases that are longer than 25 words are taken into consideration.
It is assumed that the work is original, if the similarity coefficients determined by the system do not exceed 20%.

The thesis advisor encloses an abridged similarity report with the thesis submitted to the Dean’s Office.
In the case of a coefficient exceeding the limit, the advisor analyzes the borrowings.
If the reasons for the higher ratio are citations (which are correctly marked) and their excessive number is not in doubt, the advisor confirms the independence of the thesis.
In this case, the student is admitted to the exam.

A student, whose thesis has a higher similarity coefficient for reasons other than the correct citations, is not allowed to the final examination.
The thesis advisor is required to clarify the situation with the student, and to oblige him to correct his work.
If the student does not make revisions of the thesis after the intervention of the advisor, the disciplinary proceedings against the author of the thesis are initiated.
